PORCELANITIKA

WELCOME TO PORCELANITIKA. THIS IS AN INVITATION TO UNCOVER THE MYSTERIES OF OUR BODY’S LARGEST ORGAN.

UP TO NOW, THE EVOLUTION OF OUR SPECIES AND THEREFORE OF OUR SKIN, HAS BEEN DEFINED BY NATURAL MECHANISMS SUCH AS NATURAL SELECTION AND EVOLUTION.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO OUR SKIN WHEN UPRISING TECHNOLOGIES SUCH AS GENETIC MODIFICATIONS ALLOW US TO MASTER AND MODIFY OUR BODIES AT OUR OWN WILL?

WILL WE CONTINUE TO BE THE SAME SPECIES?

Background

For my final Master's research project I combined different disciplines I have always been passionate about. The aim of the thesis is to be able to research a subject (any desired subject) from a design perspective, combining different topics to reach a conclusion that will derive on the Master's project.

I choose to investigate the influence design has had on our human experience, going back to our ancestors at the dawn of human kind. I choose to focus the research on the skin, our largest organ and our interface with the world. Understanding the skin as our main "touchpoint" with the rest of the world, in this thesis I analyse how the skin shapes our experience with the world. The thesis concludes with the need to redesign the experience of ageing and dying which is explored in the Master's Project, AURA. It must also be noted that it has a very personal aspect, as it explores the relationship I had with my grandmother. Both the Thesis as well as the project are, in essence, a tribute to her.
